MARYSVILLE, WA – March 23, 2026. – For the first time in program history, the Marysville Family YMCA Mock Trial team advanced to the Washington State Mock Trial Championship, finishing in 2nd place overall.
Washington’s YMCA Mock Trial program includes more than 1,000 students statewide, with only 28 high school teams advancing to the state tournament. From there, just a handful reach the final round, historically dominated by a small group of established programs.
“This is a remarkable achievement,” said Eric Hanson, Volunteer Coach. “Our students showed not only preparation and professionalism, but a deep commitment to respect and civility.”
In a closely contested final against University Prep, the championship was decided by a 3–2 split and a 1% margin, underscoring just how competitive the field is at the highest level.
“Our team has been working together for over four years and this is an incredible achievement for the program and the city of Marysville, said Taryn Dinuis, Associate Executive Director, Marysville Family YMCA. “Our community has come together to support this group and we are so proud of them to represent us at a statewide event.”
Several students were also recognized for individual excellence. Rudy Vazquez earned the Tournament Outstanding Attorney Award. Mabel Robison was named Championship Trial Outstanding Attorney and Simrin Dhaliwal received the Championship Trial Outstanding Witness Award. These awards highlight the depth of talent and preparation across the team.
The Marysville Y team’s success reflects months of preparation, collaboration, and commitment to one another. Throughout the competition season, students demonstrated the ability to analyze complex legal issues, construct persuasive arguments, and perform effectively under pressure.
This program is supported by a strong network of volunteers – from teachers to attorneys – who give their time to mentor students and bring real-world experience into every practice and competition.
“I couldn’t be more proud of this team,” said Juan Cortez, Teen Director, Marysville Family YMCA. “They showed what it means to support one another and rise to a challenge.”
This year’s result marks an important milestone for the Marysville Family YMCA Mock Trial program and highlights the growth of teen leadership programs.
“Programs like YMCA Mock Trial are exactly how we invest in the next generation,” said Tommy Speidel, Executive Director, Marysville Family YMCA. When we surround youth with opportunities, supported by caring mentors, they discover their potential and step into leadership.”
