The YMCA of Snohomish County will honor and celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting the 3rd Annual YMCA Martin Luther King, Jr. Inspirational Weekend on January 12-15, 2024.

MONDAY, JANUARY 15
On Monday, January 15, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday, YMCAs throughout Snohomish County will host “Make It a Day ON, Not a Day OFF” honoring Dr. King’s servant leadership spirit. The Y will mobilize hundreds of volunteers who will give back through the YMCA MLK Day of Service projects identified and facilitated by Y staff, civic leaders and community volunteers.
Also happening on Monday, January 15, join The Greater Everett MLK Community Celebration March & Rally, hosted by The Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee and partners.
Each of our six YMCA locations will be hosting local community service projects. To find out more click on the branch names below:
Check-in: 8:30 am (light breakfast provided)
Cleanup: 9 am-12 pm
The Y will provide: Coffee, donuts, gloves, trash grabbers, trash bags, and reflective vests.
What to bring: Volunteers may bring their own gloves for yard work, buckets, reflective vests, trash pickers or donate baked goods to serve at breakfast if you would like (these items can be provided for those unable to do so).
Location: Meet at the Everett Family YMCA (4730 Colby Ave, Everett, WA 98203) then volunteers will walk or to assigned location.
In partnership with the City of Everett and Westrock Construction we will complete an outdoor clean-up project in neighborhoods near the Everett Family YMCA. Volunteers will collect trash on a long section of the Interurban Trail, as well as the YMCA property, surrounding neighborhood, and community park.
Care Packages for Local Senior Center
Time: 8:30-10:30 am
What the Y will provide: Supplies for the care packages
Location: Meet at the Marysville Family YMCA Youth Development Center to assemble packages (6420 60th Dr NE, Marysville, WA 98270)
Volunteers will assemble gift packages to brighten the spirits of seniors and elders in the community. Packages will be delivered to Grandview Village where volunteers will have the opportunity to fellowship with residents. Additionally, packages will be delivered to the Tulalip Tribes Senior/Elder Center.
Local Food Bank
Schedule: 9 AM – Meet at Mill Creek YMCA
9:45 AM – Depart from Mill Creek Family YMCA to Hope Creek Food Bank
10 am – Noon – Volunteer at Food Bank
Noon – Head back to Mill Creek Family YMCA for light lunch (sandwich, chips, etc.)
What the Y will provide: T-shirts, coffee, donuts and a light lunch.
Location: Meet at Mill Creek Family YMCA, then head to Hope Creek Food Bank
At the food bank, volunteers will sort and organize produce, restock and organized non-perishable food, prepare food deliveries for households who can’t physically get to the food bank, and much, much more.
Community Service Project with the City of Monroe
Time: 8:30 am
The Y will provide: Coffee, donuts, and lunch
Location: Meet at the Monroe/Sky Valley Family YMCA (14033 Frylands blvd, Monroe, WA 98272) then disperse to local parks.
What to bring: Shovels for bark
After coffee and doughnuts at the Y and a brief program commemorating the day, volunteers will head out to beautify local parks. Upon completion of the projects, volunteers will return to the Y for lunch.
Food Drive, Garden Work and Community Clean Up
Time: 10 am-Noon & Noon-3 pm
What the Y will provide: Light snacks
What to bring: Gloves, comfy shoes and weather appropriate gear. If you are heading to the garden, please bring any gardening tools you have.
Location: Meet at Mukilteo Family YMCA (10601 47th Pl W, Mukilteo, WA 98275) then head to Kitchen Garden
Volunteers collect food to be given to the food bank in the morning from 10-12 as well as partake in a community trash clean up. We will walk the 3 block radius around the YMCA and pick up trash. In the afternoon we are headed to the Kitchen Garden. At the garden, volunteers will clear garden beds, prune trees, and move dirt.
Stanwood Camano Impact Day with the Food Bank
Breakfast: 7:30-8:00 am (Coffee & donuts provided)
Project: 8:30 am-12 pm (Lunch will also be provided after the project)
Location: Meet at Stanwood-Camano YMCA (7213 267th St NW, Stanwood, WA 98292)
What to bring: Appropriate weather outfits, gloves, and trash bags
The day will start at the YMCA with a brief program led by the Y’s Teen Leaders Club commemorating the work of Martin Luther King Jr. and using his example as a call to serve and give back to the community. Following the program, the teenagers will take the lead in guiding the volunteer team to our Food Bank in Stanwood. There, the volunteers will assist with tasks such as taking inventory, rearranging the local thrift store, and participating in the Food Bank’s backpack program by preparing small bags of food for teens in need.
Afterward, we will conduct a community trash pick-up in the vicinity of our YMCA.
