Adaptive Programs

At the YMCA, we believe everyone deserves the chance to play, swim, and grow—regardless of ability. Our adaptive programs create a welcoming space where individuals of all abilities can build confidence, develop skills, and experience the joy of movement. Whether it’s hitting a home run in Miracle League baseball, learning to swim in a supportive environment, or competing on our inclusive swim team, we are committed to making sports and aquatics accessible to all. Here, everyone belongs, everyone shines, and everyone gets in the game.

Adaptive Sports

Adaptive sports programs at the Y ensure that children and adults are able to participate by removing barriers and reimagining opportunities for all. Programs allow individuals to participate in learning opportunities in a safe and fun atmosphere. Buddies (volunteers) are provided for all players while on the court. Parents/Guardians may sit on the sidelines to watch and cheer for their player while buddies assist the athlete.

Adaptive Swim Lessons

In partnership with the YMCA of Snohomish County Stingrays, the YMCA is also offering adaptive swim lessons aimed at youth with intellectual/developmental disabilities. These classes are taught in small groups, with one certified instructor and several volunteers assisting the youth. Family participation is encouraged in these swim lessons as appropriate. Swim lessons are intended for youth who are not yet ready to join the swim team, and are offered at a subsidized cost.

Adaptive Swim Team

The Stingrays Swim Team offers athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to learn about swimming as a sport while having fun and making friends! The team practices together and competes with Special Olympics Washington.

We encourage sportsmanship as well as competition. Coaching includes the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility while working on physical training and stroke techniques.

In 2024, participation in this program is fully-funded by state grants and is strongly supported by volunteers.

To participate on the Stingrays Swim Team an athlete must be: over 5 years old and able to make their way independently across the pool (swimming or walking).
