Marysville Family YMCA Mock Trial Team Advances to State Championship Round

MARYSVILLE, WA – March 23, 2026. – For the first time in program history, the Marysville Family YMCA Mock Trial team advanced to the Washington State Mock Trial Championship, finishing in 2nd place overall.

Washington’s YMCA Mock Trial program includes more than 1,000 students statewide, with only 28 high school teams advancing to the state tournament. From there, just a handful reach the final round, historically dominated by a small group of established programs.

“This is a remarkable achievement,” said Eric Hanson, Volunteer Coach. “Our students showed not only preparation and professionalism, but a deep commitment to respect and civility.”

In a closely contested final against University Prep, the championship was decided by a 3–2 split and a 1% margin, underscoring just how competitive the field is at the highest level.

“Our team has been working together for over four years and this is an incredible achievement for the program and the city of Marysville, said Taryn Dinuis, Associate Executive Director, Marysville Family YMCA. “Our community has come together to support this group and we are so proud of them to represent us at a statewide event.”

Several students were also recognized for individual excellence. Rudy Vazquez earned the Tournament Outstanding Attorney Award. Mabel Robison was named Championship Trial Outstanding Attorney and Simrin Dhaliwal received the Championship Trial Outstanding Witness Award. These awards highlight the depth of talent and preparation across the team.

The Marysville Y team’s success reflects months of preparation, collaboration, and commitment to one another. Throughout the competition season, students demonstrated the ability to analyze complex legal issues, construct persuasive arguments, and perform effectively under pressure.

This program is supported by a strong network of volunteers – from teachers to attorneys – who give their time to mentor students and bring real-world experience into every practice and competition.

“I couldn’t be more proud of this team,” said Juan Cortez, Teen Director, Marysville Family YMCA. “They showed what it means to support one another and rise to a challenge.”

This year’s result marks an important milestone for the Marysville Family YMCA Mock Trial program and highlights the growth of teen leadership programs.

“Programs like YMCA Mock Trial are exactly how we invest in the next generation,” said Tommy Speidel, Executive Director, Marysville Family YMCA. When we surround youth with opportunities, supported by caring mentors, they discover their potential and step into leadership.”

New Executive Director Joins the Marysville Family YMCA

MARYSVILLE, WA. October 31, 2025. We are excited to welcome Thomas “Tommy” Speidel as the new Executive Director of the Marysville Family YMCA. Tommy’s first day in-branch will be Monday, November 3—we invite you to stop by, say hello, and help us give him a warm Marysville welcome!

Tommy was a “Y kid” growing up in Richmond, Virginia. At his local YMCA, he learned to play basketball and was coached by his father—an experience that helped shape his life.

He graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Science and originally planned to pursue a career as a college athletic director. However, a post-graduation internship in the athletics department at Boston College inspired him to take a different path—one that led to a purpose-driven career with the YMCA.

Tommy’s YMCA journey began in 2003 as a part-time fitness instructor with the YMCA of Greater Richmond. Over time, he advanced through several leadership roles and, in 2009, accepted an Executive Director position with the YMCA of Coastal Georgia. In 2013, he joined the Channel Islands YMCA, where he served for 12 years in multiple capacities, most recently as Regional Executive Director overseeing the Lompoc branch and the association.

Throughout his career, Tommy has demonstrated success in program management, special projects, and financial performance. He is a collaborative, inclusive leader experienced in guiding both volunteer and staff teams. He is also highly regarded for his fundraising expertise, particularly in major gifts, donor relations, and grant writing.

Tommy and his wife, Tricia, have been married for over 16 years. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time outdoors—hiking, biking, surfing, and playing music.

Marysville Family YMCA and Kendall Subaru of Marysville Expand 3rd Grade Splash Program

MARYSVILLE, WA. June 3, 2025 – The Marysville Family YMCA, in partnership with Kendall Subaru of Marysville, proudly announces the continued growth of its 3rd Grade Splash Program—now in its second year and expanding its reach across the Marysville and Tulalip communities.

Launched in 2024 with Kendall Subaru as the flagship donor, the program was made possible through a $20,000 sponsorship, which was continued in 2025 with a shared vision to equip local youth with life-saving water safety skills. In its first year, nearly 150 students from Allen Creek Elementary participated. This year, the program has scaled to include additional elementary schools and new community partners.

“This isn’t just about swimming—it’s about equity, confidence, and safety,” said JJ Frank, Executive Director of the Marysville Family YMCA. “Kendall Subaru of Marysville made this possible. Their commitment to our kids and our community is what turned this idea into a movement.”

The 3rd Grade Splash Program delivers free swim lessons and water safety education to third graders in the Marysville School District and the Tulalip Tribes community. With the YMCA’s trained aquatics team and a growing group of volunteers, children gain vital skills that reduce water-related risks and open doors to lifelong confidence and recreation.

In addition to Kendall Subaru’s leadership, the program has gained momentum with the support of new sponsors, further expanding its reach and impact.

“This is what community looks like,” added Frank. “When local businesses and neighbors come together, we create real change—safer summers, stronger kids, and a future where every child has access to the tools they need to thrive.”

Marysville Y and Kendall Auto Partner to Launch 3rd Grade Splash Program

MARYSVILLE, WA. June 27, 2024 – The Marysville Family YMCA, in partnership with Kendall Auto, is thrilled to announce the successful launch of its first-ever 3rd Grade Splash program. This valuable initiative aims to provide essential water safety skills and swimming lessons to 3rd graders in the Marysville School District.

The program kicked off in May, thanks to a generous $20,000 donation from Kendall Auto, enabling nearly 100 students from Allen Creek Elementary School to participate. The program will resume in Fall 2024. The goal is to grow the 3rd Grade Splash program so all students in the Marysville School District have access.

Marysville Family YMCA Executive Director JJ Frank expressed his gratitude, highlighting the crucial role of community support in such initiatives. “We are immensely grateful to Kendall Auto for their flagship donation,” said Frank. “This program is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to invest in our children’s safety and well-being.”

The 3rd Grade Splash program is not only a response to the immediate need for water safety education but also a long-term investment in the community’s future. Lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water surround the Marysville area, creating a need for local children to be well-equipped to navigate water safely, especially with summer on the horizon.

The 3rd Grade Splash program is supported by aquatics staff and volunteers. “We appreciate our YMCA staff and volunteers who make a difference in the lives of people every day,” said Frank. “Their dedication and hard work are the heart of this program.”

Through this initiative, the Marysville Family YMCA and Kendall Auto are not only teaching vital water safety skills but also fostering a culture of confidence and enjoyment in water-related activities among the youth. “By pooling resources and expertise, we are creating a safer community,” said Frank. “Our combined efforts are reducing water-related risks, ensuring that every child can confidently and safely enjoy the summer season.”
