SPLASH (3rd Grade Swim)

SPLASH (3rd Grade Swim)

We are very excited about starting, our partnership helping all of your students learn water safety and improve their swimming skills. This letter communicates our plans and what is required from each of us in order to make Splash 3rd Grade Swimming Lessons a success! We will need you to complete all permission slips that are sent from the school in addition to registering for the program on our website.  There is no cost to participate, just complete the registration process.

  • Safety Goals—Each student will know what a PFD (personal flotation device) is and how to properly use it, how to rescue a person using a throwing and reaching assist, where and when it is appropriate to swim, how to contact emergency services, and how to prevent water borne illnesses through personal hygiene.
  • Individual Skills Development—All curricula are based upon the YMCA swim lessons.
  •  Assess Efficacy of Program—Using pre and post program tests assessing the baseline and student progress in all of the above as well as the following:
  •  Overall Swimming Skills: 80% of participating children will progress from one level to the next
    • Breath Control: Goal is greater than 7 seconds
    • Treading Water: Goal is greater than 1 minute or a 10 second improvement
    • Float/Kick: Goal is float on back and front for 7 seconds each, flutter kick on front, back and side
    • Returning to wall/shore: Goal is to jump from side of pool and return unassisted
    • Values: 80% of participants will be able to identify and demonstrate 1 of the YMCA Character Values

Garfield Elementary Swim

Everett

With unintentional drowning found to be the second highest cause of death for children under the age of 10 and approximately 460 lakes throughout Snohomish County, Windermere and The Y recognize that swim lessons should be a necessity for all—not a luxury for some.

Through fundraising and a generous grant from our community partners, all Garfield Elementary School 3rd Graders are being given the opportunity to participate in swim lessons provided by the Y at no charge!

The Y’s goal is teaching kids how to be safe and more comfortable in the water. Students will learn water safety skills and build stroke technique in a safe and welcoming environment, for 5 thirty-minute lessons. Students will be supervised by both school and aquatic personnel.

Parents can expect their non-swimmers to have a good grasp of swimming basics and those with current swimmers can expect their child to have improved endurance and technique.

We look forward to having your children learn with us and swim with us! We are happy and grateful to partner with Windermere on this fantastic opportunity.

We do not want any part of this opportunity to be a financial hardship. If your child is in need of swimsuit or swim shorts in order to participate, please contact Esther Leonardo, Senior Director, at [email protected].
